Star Wars : Before the Awakening – Book Review

Before the Awakening is one of the many books released in preparation for the release of The Force Awakens back in 2015; It provides a glimpse in to where Rey, Finn and Poe are building up to the events of the film whilst also providing information about the state of the galaxy as a whole.

Star Wars The Force Awakens: Finn’s Story – Book Review

Jesse Holland re-tells the narrative of The Force Awakens through Finn’s eyes. The book, surprisingly, opens at the ending of Finn’s story in Before the Awakening rather than starting at the beginning of the film. This was really well done as it adds a bit more depth to certain elements of the story.

Jake Lunt Davies Interview – Concept Artist

How did you get involved with Star Wars and concept art?

I had worked with Neal Scanlan on various projects on and off between 1999 and maybe 2005. After that our careers diverged – Neal was doing more SMUFX and prosthetics jobs and I was focusing more on storyboarding and directing in commercials. I don’t think I’d actually spoken to Neal for about five years when he called me out of the blue in early June 2013 telling me he’d got Star Wars and was looking to put together a concept design team. Would I be interested? Uh…yes, I think I would. I had to do a trial week putting some ideas together for a brief on a character that would eventually become Maz to get the job and started properly on the film mid-June.

Star Wars: Aftermath – Book Review

Aftermath is the first in Chuck Wendig’s Star Wars trilogy, and takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi.  The story begins in Coruscant as people gather to pull down the statue of Emperor Palpatine, the man responsible for enslaving the galaxy who had recently been killed during the Battle of Endor.

Star Wars: Phasma – Book Review

One of the main criticisms of The Force Awakens when it was released in 2015 was the lack of Captain Phasma, despite being one of the main characters heavily used to market the film. If Delilah S. Dawson’s book Phasma is anything to go off, fans will want to see as much of the character as they possibly can in the foreseeable future. Continue reading “Star Wars: Phasma – Book Review”

Daniel Adjei Interview – Jashco Phurus in The Force Awakens.

Jaschco Phurus was a human male pirate who prowled the Arrowhead Region of the galaxy east of the planet Coruscant. Around thirty years after the Battle of Endor, Phurus was standing next to the wall opposite the entrance to Maz Kanata’s castle on the planet Takodana when the smuggler Han Solo entered with the scavenger Rey, the former stormtrooper Finn and the astromech droid BB-8. Shortly after their entrance, many of the castle’s patrons, Phurus included, rushed outside to witness the destruction of the Hosnian system by the First Order’s Starkiller Base super weapon, after which First Order forces attacked and destroyed Kanata’s castle.

Mason Ball The Force Awakens Interview – Praster Ommlen.

I managed to get the chance to interview Mason Ball recently. Mason was the man behind Praster Ommlen in The Force Awakens.

The Ottegan male known as Praster Ommlen worked as a gunrunner before putting his life of crime behind him and becoming a devotee of the Sacred Order of Ramulus, an Ithorian sect of worship. Around thirty years after the Battle of Endor, Ommlen spent time in the castle of the pirate Maz Kanata, where he offered spiritual advice to other criminals. While there he connected with the Narquois bandit Pru Sweevant and the Bravaisian gemologists Munduri and Sonsigo.

In a recent interview I conducted, I asked Keith De Winter several questions about his time playing Goss Toowers in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Goss Toowers was a male member of the Shozer species who lived approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor. He was part of the Resistance and served on the technical crew that provided mechanical support to the Resistance’s fleet of starfighters. A hard worker, Toowers’ duties also included the monitoring of arriving and departing ships. Toowers was present at the Resistance base located on the planet D’Qar shortly before the Battle of Starkiller Base.

Scott Richardson Interview – Quiggold

Quiggold was a male Gabdorin pirate and the first mate of Captain Sidon Ithano’s crew in the Outer Rim in the decades after the Galactic Civil War. Assisting Ithano in the hunt for a possible lost shipment of kyber crystals meant for Count Dooku, Quiggold and the rest of the crew ended up finding a clone trooper frozen in stasis named Kix and locations to long-forgotten former Separatist bases.

He would also accompany Captain Ithano on a visit to Maz Kanata’s castle 30 years after the Battle of Endor where a fugitive First Orderdefector named Finn offered to join their crew in exchange for safe passage into the Outer Rim, away from the First Order’s reach.

How does working on Star Wars compare to all your work on other projects?

Paul Warren is an actor known for playing characters in prosthetic makeup and creature suits in such films as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World, Clash of the Titans and World War Z.

Paul was the man behind Varmik in The Force Awakens as well as a dowager alien during the Canto Bight scenes in the Last Jedi. Varmik was a Hassk thug that was present in Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana thirty years after the Battle of Endor, shortly prior to the castle’s destruction by the First Order.

Exploring the Life of Maz Kanata and Her Growing Importance to the Resistance.

When the Force Awakens was released in 2015, the world was introduced to Maz Kanata, a force-sensitive female known as the “Pirate Queen”. Throughout the film, there wasn’t any signs to suggest how Maz got to where she is now, and also, how she ended up with Luke Skywalkers lightsaber. As the Last Jedi is drawing closer, I decided to do some digging to find out as much as I can about Maz and here is what was uncovered.

Maz (Played by Lupita Nyong’o) is a humanoid with force capabilities who was born over a millennium before the war between the Resistance and the First Order.

With the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015, and the introduction of new characters such as Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren and Supreme Leader Snoke amongst several others, there has been a lot of speculation as to what the backstories of these characters are.
