In a recent interview , I caught up with Rony Bridges, a British actor who portrayed the First Order Admiral in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
How does working on Star Wars compare to all your work on other projects?
Working on Star Wars is an amazing experience. I’ve worked on other major films but Star Wars beats them all. It’s fun working with guys playing with $200 million dollars worth of toys.
You played the First Order Admiral, how did you get the role?
I would like to believe I got the role because of talent, charisma etc. but I knew the First Assistant Director.
How long did it take to get into costume?
No time at all, getting into costume was all made to measure.
Can you describe your time filming the Hux speech scenes?
The General Hux speech was very intense and replicated similar events in Germany 1939.
Did you have much interaction with Gwendoline Christie, if so, what is she like to work with?
I had good fun with Gwendoline. I couldn’t resist asking her how she managed to pee wearing her costume and she said if she told me she would have to kill me.
Was there much interaction between yourself and the directors, if so, what sort of things would you discuss?
JJ Abrams was great, he compared me to the late Peter Cushing. The only real direction he gave was don’t laugh, don’t smile, no matter what happens you’ve seen it all before even if there is chaos around you.
If you could play any other characters, who would it be and why?
I would play the Admiral again in a heartbeat or anyone else I was asked to play.
Who are some of your favourite characters from the franchise and why?
My Favourite characters are the Royal Guards, I love the uniforms.
What does Star Wars mean to you?
Star Wars has changed my life, I now get invited to attend conventions across the world.
Did you ever think your work would lead you to bein a franchise like Star Wars?
I never thought for a minute that I would be in it, never mind featured. I was born lucky I guess.
What are some of your highlights filming Star Wars?
The best highlight was when 6 officers were sent home at the end of the first day and I was asked to stay, that was when it was revealed that I was the Admiral.
What are some of your favourite scenes from Star Wars and why?
My favourite scene is obviously the iconic General Hux speech during Episode VII.
Do you attend many comic conventions, if so, what does fan interaction mean to you, and do you have any appearances coming up?
I attend many conventions and love to meet the fans and I appreciate them being there because, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be there.
Are you open to doing more work for the Star Wars franchise in the future?
Who wouldn’t do Star Wars, I know people who would give their right arm to be in it.
I’d like to say a big thank you to Rony for answering my questions and hopefully we will see him reprise his role as the Admiral.
May the force be with you!
