Everything you need to know about Star Wars: Rogue One

With Less than a month to go until Rogue One is released in Cinemas, here is everything you need to know in preparation for the new release.

Firstly this Film is already historic due to it being the first Star Wars Anthology movie. Anthology usually means films told over several chapters, but The Star Wars franchise is tweaking that definition slightly, and basically using the word “Anthology” to mean “Stories Told Outside Of The Central Saga.”

The film itself is written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards

Characters and Plot:

Rogue One is set to finish 10 minutes before A New Hope begins.

If you look at the second paragraph of the opening crawl for A New Hope you will see the plot for Rogue One. The film will ultimately show how the Rebel Alliance stole the plans for the Death Star.

The main character in the film is Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones). Jyn has been alone since she was 15 and during that time has become a notorious criminal, but that changed when she was taken in by the Rebels and was offered a chance to redeem herself. She has to steal the plans for the Death Star.

Accompanied by Cassian Andor (Diego Luna)who was hired in order to steady Jyn, they recruit several other members of the alliance for the mission ahead, These characters are Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed). (Seen Below)

If you are interested in finding out more about these characters then check out my older post introducing the cast at https://jabbaspalace.wordpress.com/2016/07/23/star-wars-rogue-one-character-profiles/

The biggest twist at present is the fact that the inventor of the Death Star is Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelson), the father of Jyn who was hired by Empire director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn)  in order to create the battle station.

Jonathan Olley

The two have met prior to this agreement as revealed within the book “Catalyst” by James Luceno. Galen Erso is old friends with villain Director Krennic. Due to his high-quality research in the field of energy, Galen becomes a pawn of the Empire. After being saved by Krennic, Galen becomes indebted to Krennic; hence his work with the Death Star.

Now we can’t have a Star Wars film without Droids and Rogue One’s droid will be one to remember for years to come and his name is K2-SO (Alan Tudyk)

The tall, powerful security droid is described by director Gareth Edwards as: “Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body”. He and Jyn Erso are also very similar as they are both seeking redemption for wrongdoings in the past.

History will be made once again during Rogue One, with the introduction of Saw Gerrera, the first character to appear in animation before being introduced to the live-action films.

Saw Gerrera is a freedom fighter with a surprisingly large background when it comes to galactic history. The warrior was first seen in season 5 of The Clone Wars animated series, where he became an instant fan favourite due to his heavy combat with the droid army when the Separatists took over his world. Saw and his sister Steela were also part of the group being trained by Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the padawan Ahsoka Tano unofficially.

Since the events of Revenge Of The Sith, Saw has become “Something” as suggested in the Rogue One trailer. Kathleen Kennedy states: “Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists. He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”  In addition to this Saw has become a one-man army, working as an ally of the rebel squad rather than being a part of the squad.

In terms of familiar faces there will be a few in Rogue One, the first needs no introduction and has been seen in all the recent trailers for the film, Darth Vader (James Earl Jones), the villain will be making an appearance in the film although it is unclear whether this will be a cameo or not.

we also have the return of Rebel leader Mon Mothma from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith as well as potentially Senator Bail Organa. Organa was first introduced in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and although he has an important political position within the fictional universe, fans mostly recognise him for something else: being Princess Leia’s adopted father.

New Planets, Aliens and Vehicles:

Moving on from characters and plot lines, Rogue One will also see the introduction of new planets, species and vehicles.

Jedha is a small desert moon set with a permanent winter. The planet populated one of the first civilizations to explore the force and its nature. Jedha serves as a holy site for pilgrims seeking spiritual guidance, but during the course of Rogue One the planet is currently being occupied by the Empire.

The next planet is Scarif, a tropical paradise which is the construction facility for the imperial war machine. Scarif is covered in an impenetrable deflector shield and is also heavily defended which will be seen during the film.

Aliens/New species:

Next is the new Aliens being introduced to the Star War Franchise.

First of all is Moroff, a Gigoran who seeks out combat zones in order to sell his brawn and firepower to anyone who needs it.

Next is Rebel Commando Pao. Pao is from the Drabata species and is a vital part of the team. he works with Jyn Erso in order to help steal the Death Star plans.

Then there’s Bistan, from the Lakaru species. He is a gunner aboard one of the newer vehicles, the U-Wing.

And finally is Edrio Two Tubes. Edrio Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his eggmate, Benthic. The two share the nickname derived from the breathing apparatus that allows their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres. Edrio’s homeworld Yar Togna was conquered and occupied by the Empire, forcing him to flee as a refugee. Desiring to strike back at the Empire, Edrio and Benthic have allied with Saw Gerrera.

There will most likely be other Aliens in the film but at present, this is all the info we have.

First of all is Orson Krennic’s imperial shuttle. The vehicle was a Delta-class T-3C shuttle used to transport Krennic and his Death Trooper unit.

Next is the TIE Striker which is a streamlined version of the TIE line starfighters. They are used by the Galactic Empire during the battle of Scarif.

Following the TIE Striker is the AT-ACT Walker. Many would assume that this is the AT-AT from the battle of Hoth, but the AT-ACT is a larger version with a cargo bed for the transportation of heavy building materials or combat munitions.

The Final new vehicle is the U-Wing, which is a sturdy transport and gunship used by the Rebels. The U-wing starfighter is a well-armed swing-wing vessel that must penetrate heavy fire zones to deposit soldiers onto battlefields and then fly air support during dangerous missions against the Empire.

One of the main things I am truly looking forward to seeing is the different Variations of Stormtroopers.

We will be seeing the original Stormtroopers but there are also some new additions that have never been seen until Rogue One.

Shoretroopers are a specialized variant of the Galactic Empire’s Stormtroopers trained and equipped for combat in tropical environments such as Scarif.

The Imperial Hovertank pilots are drivers operating the Imperial Assault Hovertanks patrolling Jedha.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Death Troopers Ph: Jonathan Olley Lucasfilm LFL 2016.

Deathtroopers are an elite version of the Stormtroopers which focus on issues regarding the Imperial Navy. Director Orson Krennic had a group of Deathtroopers server under his command against the Rebel Alliance.

So there you have it, all you need to know about Star Wars: Rogue One. If you have any questions or think I have missed anything, let me know!

Rogue One will be released in the UK on December 15th and tickets are on sale now.

May The Force Be With You All!
