Meet Star Wars: Rogue One’s new cast.

With Star Wars: Rogue One edging closer to its official release, it’s time to get to grips with the new cast and their roles in the film.

The main character in Rogue One is Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Jyn Erso has been alone from the age of 15, and during her time, has established necessary fighting skills as well as gaining a bold understanding of the galactic underworld, that could prove to be very handy for the Rebel Alliance if she complies. Producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had this to say regarding the character: “She has been detained [by the Rebellion] and is being given an opportunity to be useful. And by being useful, it may commute her sentence… She’s a real survivor. She becomes a kind of Joan of Arc in the story.”

Following on from Jyn Erso is Rebel Intelligence officer Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).

Captain Andor was brought in by the Rebel Alliance to steady captive Jyn Erso. He’s a committed, steady and practical kind of man and has been involved in his fair amount of combat for sure. Lucasfilm’s chief of story development Kiri Hart states: “He conveys a fair amount of experience and the reality of what it’s like to do this every day, to try to figure out how to resist the Empire effectively and intelligently,”.

Following on from Andor is Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen).

Although not an actual Jedi, Chirrut has devoted his life to the Jedi ways and has used the spiritual element to overcome his blindness and become an exceptional warrior. At this point in the Star Wars timeline, the Jedi are no more, but Chirrut still follows the Jedi methods and uses them as a normal person to take a stand against the empire.

The fourth member of this formidable alliance is Chirrut’s friend Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen).

Where Chirrut prefers ancient weapons and religion, Baze Malbus chooses some heavy armour and a blaster. His main responsibility is the protection of Chirrut. Kathleen Kennedy states: “He understands Chirrut’s spiritual centeredness but he doesn’t necessarily support it,”. Baze goes along with Chirrut’s force beliefs solely because Chirrut has a strong belief in the force.

The next member of the squadron is lead pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed)/

Bodhi Rook is the hot-headed pilot who’s abrasiveness is overshadowed by his immense piloting skills, Kennedy had this today about Bodhi: “He flies a lot of cargo, one of his key jobs, and he tends to be a little tense, a little volatile, but everybody in the group really relies on his technical skills.”

Following on from Bodhi is Jyn Erso’s long last father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen).

Galen Erso could potentially be one of the most important characters in Rogue One for the fact he has obtained knowledge regarding how the universe actually works, that is being hunted by both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. This is all the info regarding Galen Erso that has been revealed by Lucasfilm as of yet, due to them wanting to keep people guessing about him as a whole.

One character Star Wars fans are extremely excited for if Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker).

Saw Gerrera is a freedom fighter with a surprisingly large background when it comes to galactic history. The warrior was first seen in season 5 of The Clone Wars animated series, where he became an instant fan favourite due to his heavy combat with the droid army when the Separatists took over his world. Saw and his sister Steela were also part of the group being trained by Anakin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the padawan Ahsoka Tano unofficially.

Since the events of Revenge Of The Sith, Saw has become “Something” as suggested in the Rogue One trailer. Kathleen Kennedy states: “Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists. He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”  In addition to this Saw has become a one-man army, working as an ally of the rebel squad rather than being a part of the squad.

K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) is the droid of the group considered to be the polar opposite of C3-P0.

The tall, powerful security droid is described by director Gareth Edwards as: “Chewbacca’s personality in a droid’s body”. He and Jyn Erso are also very similar as they are both seeking redemption for wrongdoings in the past.

One of the most recognisable characters in Rogue One is Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly), Fans will most likely remember her from Return Of The Jedi where she had the infamous line:“Many Bothans died to bring us this information.”

Mon Mothma

In the Star Wars universe, Mon Mothma is a former senator responsible for uniting several planets being tormented and ruled by the Empire. In Rogue One her role is extremely vital to the plot line as she helped cause the destruction of the first death star by recruiting Jyn Erso and Captain Andor for a mission to receive important information regarding the death star.

The villain of the film is Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).

Krennic is an Imperial leader aiming to destroy the Rebel forces with his squad of Deathtroopers whilst attempting to avoid fan favourite and Krennic’s enforcer, Darth Vader. Krennic has been described as being: “a lot more terrifying when he’s really smart and really effective. There is a lot of palace intrigue going on in the Empire, with people conspiring to move up the ranks and sabotaging each other. There’s not a lot of loyalty there.”

Stay tuned for more Star Wars updates in the near future and be sure to check out Star Wars: Rogue One in cinemas on December 16. May the force be with you.
